Acuvue Oasys 1-Day vs Dailies Total1: Which Daily Lens Should You Buy?
Your prescription names the lens you can buy, so this head-to-head sets out what Acuvue Oasys 1-Day and Dailies Total1 each claim, what each costs per box at ContactsDirect and Clearly in October 2026, and what to ask at your fitting.
Acuvue Oasys 1-Day vs Dailies Total1: which daily contact lens should you buy?
Buy the lens your prescription names: under the FTC's Contact Lens Rule a seller must match the brand your prescriber wrote down, so the real decision is which of these two to ask your eye doctor to trial, then where to buy it cheapest. On price, ContactsDirect lists Acuvue Oasys 1-Day with HydraLuxe at $115.99 per 90-pack box and DAILIES TOTAL1 at $134.99 per 90-pack box (checked October 2026). On the spec sheet, the Acuvue lens adds built-in UV blocking, while Alcon's lens puts nearly 100% water at its surface.
Everything below is drawn from Johnson & Johnson's and Alcon's own product pages, the two retailers' listings behind our links and the FTC's consumer guidance, rather than first-hand use. It is general information, not medical advice.
The rule that decides this for you
People ask this as if it were a choice between two shampoos, and it is not. The FTC's consumer guidance on buying glasses and contacts states that the FTC enforces the Eyeglass Rule and Contact Lens Rule, and that sellers must ask for a copy of your prescription or check your prescription information with your prescriber. A contact lens prescription carries the brand or manufacturer of the recommended contacts along with the power, base curve and diameter, so a shop cannot swap DAILIES TOTAL1 for Acuvue Oasys 1-Day because one is cheaper that month. ContactsDirect's product page says the same thing from the seller's side: it cannot complete orders without a valid, unexpired contact lens prescription, and it asks you to confirm that the contact lens brand and product you selected both match your prescription.
The FTC also explains why the brand line exists. If you have never worn contacts, or you are trying a new type or brand, your prescriber may want you to wear the lenses for a few days and return for an in-person follow-up appointment to evaluate how the lenses fit. That fitting is the honest answer to "which should I buy". What this page can do is set out what each lens claims, what each costs at the stores we link, and what to raise at that appointment. Nothing on a spec sheet tells you which lens will feel better on your own eyes.

Alcon's product page describes DAILIES TOTAL1 as the first and only daily disposable lenses with nearly 100% water at the surface, "so nothing touches the eye but a gentle cushion of moisture — for a lens that feels like nothing", and adds that SmarTears Technology releases an ingredient found naturally in tears that helps to stabilize the lipid layer of the tear film. Johnson & Johnson's ACUVUE page keeps its pitch to four lines: tear-inspired design, superior comfort while using digital screens, built-in UV protection and an invisible edge, backed by a comfort promise it phrases as "Love ACUVUE or get your money back". ContactsDirect's description of the Acuvue lens fills in the HydraLuxe part: a network of tear-like molecules throughout the lens, working with your natural tear film to provide moisture retention and reduce end-of-day dryness.
Read those as the makers' marketing, which is what they are. The water-content figures are the one place the two listings differ in a measurable way, 38% for the Acuvue lens against 33% for DAILIES TOTAL1, with Alcon's surface technology sitting on top of that core figure. Whether that difference matters for your eyes is a question for the person who fits them. Our guide to buying daily disposables online for sensitive eyes covers how the retailers describe comfort claims without a fitting.
Price per box at the stores we link
ContactsDirect (United States) listed Acuvue Oasys 1-Day with HydraLuxe at $115.99 per box and DAILIES TOTAL1 at $134.99 per box for the 90-packs when checked in October 2026, and its homepage states that free shipping is always included. Both listings drop with an annual-supply purchase, which the Acuvue product page defines as "an annual supply of 8 boxes": $104.11 per box for the Acuvue lens and $119.36 per box for DAILIES TOTAL1. The Acuvue page describes the 90-pack as a full 3-month supply, which is how eight boxes come to equal a year for two eyes. Both product pages carry the same banner, "GET UP TO $250 BACK ON YOUR PURCHASE! YOU MAY QUALIFY FOR A MANUFACTURER REBATE", which is the maker's rebate rather than a store discount; read the linked PDF before you count on it. ContactsDirect also advertises an online prescription renewal for $29 for shoppers whose prescription has lapsed; whether you qualify is its call and your prescriber's, not ours, and the FTC is clear that you cannot use an expired prescription to purchase glasses or contact lenses.
Check the price at ContactsDirect for whichever lens is on your prescription.
Clearly (Canada, prices in Canadian dollars) listed the DAILIES TOTAL1 90-pack at $118.99 per box with a sale price of $95.19, and the Acuvue Oasys 1-Day with HydraLuxe 90-pack at $115.99 per box with a sale price of $92.79, with free delivery always, when checked in October 2026. Its product pages note that contact lenses require up to 2 days to process plus shipping, and they ask for the date of the prescription and the doctor's name because prescription contacts are zero-rated for Canadian sales tax. Canadian readers can check the price at Clearly; for the two stores side by side, read our Clearly versus ContactsDirect comparison.
Live prices move with promotions, so treat the figures above as the October 2026 snapshot they are and expect the store page to differ. Our ContactsDirect review looks at how the store's pricing compares with buying from a practice, and our guide to the cheapest year of daily contacts covers the annual-supply route in more detail.
Where Acuvue Oasys 1-Day has the edge
Price. At ContactsDirect it is the cheaper of the two per box, on both the single-box and the annual-supply prices quoted above. At Clearly the gap is narrower: the two list prices sit a few Canadian dollars apart.
UV blocking. Johnson & Johnson lists built-in UV protection among the lens's four headline features, and ContactsDirect's description says the UV protection blocks harmful UVA and UVB rays. Alcon's DAILIES TOTAL1 page makes no UV-blocking claim at all. A contact lens covers only part of the eye, so this page does not treat UV blocking as a health claim; it is simply a feature one lens lists and the other does not.
Screen-day positioning. "Superior comfort while using digital screens" is Johnson & Johnson's phrase, and ContactsDirect's description is aimed at people who spend long hours on screens. That is a marketing position, not a measurement, but it tells you who the lens is being sold to.
A money-back promise. The ACUVUE page carries "Love ACUVUE or get your money back" with a link to its comfort promise. Alcon's page points you to an eye care professional for a trial instead.
A newer sibling. The ACUVUE page invites you to try ACUVUE OASYS MAX 1-Day, and ContactsDirect lists the OASYS MAX 1-Day in 30 and 90 packs alongside the standard lens. If your prescriber is already writing a new prescription, ask which of the two Acuvue dailies they mean.
Where DAILIES TOTAL1 has the edge
Surface water. Alcon's whole case is the Water Gradient design: nearly 100% water at the lens surface over a 33% core, which it describes as nothing touching the eye but a cushion of moisture. The ContactsDirect listing puts the surface figure at over 80%. These are the maker's and the retailer's numbers, and they describe a design, not a clinical result.
SmarTears. Alcon says DAILIES TOTAL1 is the first and only contact lens with SmarTears Technology, releasing an ingredient found naturally in tears that helps stabilize the lipid layer of the tear film. Again, a design claim from the maker.
Range at the retailer. ContactsDirect lists DAILIES TOTAL1 in a 30 pack, for Astigmatism in a 90 pack and Multifocal in a 90 pack. The standard Acuvue Oasys 1-Day's astigmatism version is listed in a 30 pack, with the larger astigmatism and multifocal packs sitting under the OASYS MAX 1-Day name.
Price in Canada. At Clearly the DAILIES TOTAL1 90-pack lists at $118.99 against $115.99 for the Acuvue lens, so the premium that is obvious at ContactsDirect almost disappears there.
How to switch brands the legal way
If you wear one of these and want to try the other, the route runs through your prescriber, not the checkout page. The FTC's guidance says a prescriber may want a trial wear and a follow-up for a new brand, and that under the Contact Lens Rule your prescription must be good for at least a year unless there is a medical reason for a shorter period. The one exception the FTC describes is a manufacturer selling the same lens under a brand name and a store-brand name, where no approval is needed to switch; it does not apply here, because DAILIES TOTAL1 and Acuvue Oasys 1-Day are different lenses from different makers.
When you do order online, give the seller a copy of the prescription yourself; the FTC notes most online sellers have a process for uploading or sending one in. It also warns that if you only give the seller your prescription details and your prescriber does not respond to the verification request within eight business hours, the seller can fill the order automatically, even if you gave them incorrect information. Uploading the actual document avoids that trap.
Verdict
If your prescription already names one of these lenses, buy that one and shop on price. At ContactsDirect that means $115.99 per box for Acuvue Oasys 1-Day with HydraLuxe or $134.99 per box for DAILIES TOTAL1 before the annual-supply discount, with free shipping included; check the price at ContactsDirect against your prescriber's quote before you decide where to reorder.
If you are choosing with your eye doctor, bring three facts to the appointment: the Acuvue lens is the cheaper of the two at the US store we link and lists built-in UV blocking; the Alcon lens is built around a water-gradient surface and SmarTears, with no UV claim; and both come in astigmatism versions. Ask whether a trial of each is sensible for your eyes. For how the two online contact lens stores compare on everything else, see our full shortlist.
FAQ
Is Dailies Total1 better than Acuvue Oasys 1-Day for dry eyes?
Nothing on either maker's page answers that for an individual, and this site does not give medical advice. Alcon's page tells you to ask your eye care professional for complete wear, care and safety information, and the FTC describes the trial-and-follow-up process a prescriber uses when you try a new brand. That appointment, not a spec table, is where comfort gets decided.
Which is cheaper, Acuvue Oasys 1-Day or Dailies Total1?
At ContactsDirect, Acuvue Oasys 1-Day with HydraLuxe listed at $115.99 per 90-pack box against $134.99 for DAILIES TOTAL1 when checked in October 2026, falling to $104.11 and $119.36 per box with an annual-supply purchase. At Clearly, in Canadian dollars, the list prices were $115.99 and $118.99.
Can I order Dailies Total1 if my prescription says Acuvue Oasys 1-Day?
No. The FTC's Contact Lens Rule requires sellers to ask for your prescription or verify it with your prescriber, and the brand is part of the prescription. ContactsDirect states it cannot complete orders without a valid, unexpired contact lens prescription and asks you to confirm the brand and product match it.
Do both lenses come in versions for astigmatism?
Yes. ContactsDirect lists DAILIES TOTAL1 for Astigmatism in a 90 pack and Acuvue Oasys 1-Day for Astigmatism in a 30 pack. Each is a separate prescription from the spherical lens, so you cannot move between them on your own.
Is there a rebate on either lens?
ContactsDirect's product pages for both carry the banner "GET UP TO $250 BACK ON YOUR PURCHASE! YOU MAY QUALIFY FOR A MANUFACTURER REBATE". That is the manufacturer's program with its own terms in a linked PDF, not a store discount, so read it before you factor it into the per-box price.
